Munich, or München as the locals call it, is the capitol of Bavaria. I'm told that Bavarians are thought of as somewhat unsophisticated by Germans from other parts of the country. Well, that might be true because the Bavarians I ran into seemed to be easy-going and freindly people. Sophisticated people, by my admittedly unscientific observation, tend to be stuck up. Be that as it may, Bavarians treated me well and I had a good time in Munich.
Everybody is waiting for the Glockenspiel to strike the hour
I stayed at the hotel Hahn, which is just up Landberger Straße from the Octoberfest grounds on S-bahn train #19. It's a brisk walk to the Theresienwiese, where Octoberfest takes place, which keeps the drunks at a pleasant distance.
Munich has a well-preserved old town, or altstadt, that's fun to run around in. There's a big pedestrian mall in the old town that grafts a shopping district to the historic area. That's great, since you can wander through shops looking for the perfect beer-stein, for example, while rubbernecking all the old buildings and not get run over by a speeding Mercedes at the same time. There is also good public transportation to get you to the altstadt with a minimum of hassle.
There seem to be churches everywhere you look
