Cocktail Shaker

This is an integral bar tool, used with or instead of a boston shaker.  Most shakers have three parts: the tumbler, the lid, and a cap on top.  The cap can be removed and a shaken drink can be strain directly out of the shaker.

Boston Shaker

This dual-part bar tool, the first being a stainless steel tumbler, followed by a glass, is most commonly used by bartenders to mix drinks.  The steel part fits snugly over the glass, creating a seal.  Then vigorous shaking occurs.

Strainer

This tool is placed over the steel portion of a boston shaker, eliminating any ice and fruit particles from making it’s way into the drink.

Bar/Mixing Spoon

A barspoon is generally the same measurement as a teaspoon, aiding in the measurement of ingredients.  One also uses this tool to stir drinks that require such an activity.  Most barspoons have grooved necks and handles, which when properly used, twist and turn as stirring occurs.

Juicer

All good cocktails contain fresh squeezed juices.  At least your lime and lemon juice should be freshly squeezed, if anything.  To use this tool, one would cut a fruit in half, lay the meat side down into the pointed portion, and push down, releasing any juices into the cupped portion of the juicer.

Muddler

A muddler is used to smash ingredients together, marrying flavors of more than one fruit, spice, juice, or spirit. Popular muddled drinks included The Mojito and Old-Fashioned.

How to:

Chill a martini glass:

Simply take your martini glass, and put it inside your refrigerator.  If a fridge is not available, you can place a scoop of ice in your glass, add water, and let sit for 30 or so seconds.  Then remove the ice and water, shake out any excess liquid, and you have a perfectly chilled martini glass.

Make your own simple syrup:

Simple syrup is as easy as it sounds!  It is equal parts water to sugar.  Add your desired amount to a saucepan in equal parts (1 cup sugar, 1 cup water, etc.).  Bring ingredients to a simmer and keep stirring until sugar dissolves.  Remove from saucepan and chill in refrigerator.  Remove a few hours later and there you have it!  A must addition to cocktails!  (For added creativity, add your favorite spice to the simmering water – mint, cloves, basil, rosemary, etc. to make a nice spice-infused simple syrup).
